Ljubljana Summer School 2009

Dr. Bjorn Gunnarsson, Rector of RES, lectured in the International Summer School on Environmental & Resource Management in Ljubljana this summer. 



The International Summer School on Environmental & Resource Management was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 20th of July to 2nd of August, 2009. Dr. Gunnarsson lectured in the Ljubljana Summer School for the third time. 

The School is offered through the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, University Graduate Programme in Environmental Protection. The Head of the Summer School is ProfessorFranc Lobnik and the schools webpage. Eighteen students from Europe and Americas attended the two week long program.

The 2009 International Summer School was divided into three lecture series and student workshops: Workshop 1 was on Environmental Management, Economy & Governance; Workshop 2 on Climate Change & Low Carbon Society; and Workshop 3 on Sustainable Land Use & Resource Management All together twelve lecturers taught in the program.

Dr. Gunnarsson lectured in Workshop 2 on the topic of Environmental Security: Impacts of Climate Change in the Arctic. He emphasized both climate change impacts on future extraction of fossil fuels in the Arctic, and increased shipping in the Arctic Ocean due to melting of sea ice and opening of new trade routes between the North-Atlantic and North-Pacific Oceans. Dr. Gunnarsson also participated in a field excursion to the Koper – Dragonja Valley, held on Saturday July 25th.
