Dr. Johann Orlygsson is Professor of biotechnology at the University of Akureyri and Coordinator for the Biofuels & Bioenergy specialization at RES.
Dr. Orlygsson received this Ph.D. (1994) in microbiology from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden. He then did post-doctoral research (1995) in Groningen, Holland.
Dr. Orlygsson’s main research emphasis has been on energy biotechnology - especially on thermophilic microorganism that produce valuable byproducts from biomass. His current research interests deal with production of hydrogen, ethanol and methane by thermophilic anaerobic bacteria, as well as the production of single cell protein by thermophilic hydrogen oxidizing bacteria, and the production of valuable bio-products from glycerol. This research is done in cooperation with both Icelandic biotechnology firms and foreign research universities.
Dr. Orlygsson was the Scientific Coordinator of the Icelandic Biotechnology Network (2003 - 2007) based at the University of Akureyri.
