Dr. Bjorn Gunnarsson is the Rector (2006 - Present) of RES | the School for Renewable Energy Science in Iceland.
He studied at both Johns Hopkins University and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in the United States, and received Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in geochemistry (1987) in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, and continued as Post-Doctoral Fellow at Caltech in isotope geochemistry (1987 - 1989).
He held the position of Associate Program Chair (1994 - 2000) and Senior Faculty of the Masters Program in Environmental Science & Policy within the Advanced Professional Program of the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, Johns Hopkins University.
Other assignments include Director of the Environmental Research Institute of the University of Iceland (2000 - 2003) and Dean of the Faculty of Natural Research Sciences at the University of Akureyri (2003 - 2006).
His research and teaching interests include the chemical and physical evolution of the Earth's oceanic crust, central volcanic systems, environmental geology and natural resources, renewable energy sources and technologies, and natural hazard and risk assessments. Among various assignments, Dr. Gunnarsson acts as an Expert Evaluator and Ranking Panel Member (2003 - Present) for the European Commission's FP6 and FP7 Programs in Brussels.
