RES Opening Convocation

On Saturday 9 February the academic year of RES officially started in Akureyri. 31 students from ten countries are registered for the school’s M.Sc. program in renewable energy science in 2008.
This Saturday marks the first day of academic operations for RES – the School for Renewable Energy Science. RES is a private institution of research and higher learning offering a one-year M.Sc. program in Renewable Energy Science, in addition to an ExecutiveSchool and a Summer School program. The M.Sc. program is offered in cooperation with two of Iceland’s public universities, the University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri, which will act as awarding bodies. RES is located in Akureyri and will base its operations on Iceland’s leadership in the use of renewable energy sources.
The Icelandic Minister of Education, Ms. Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, will officially start RES’s 2008-9 Academic Year at a Formal Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, 9 February. Other speakers at the event include Dr. Bjorn Gunnarsson Rector of RES, Tryggvi Thor Haraldsson Director of RARIK, Dr. Masami Nakagawa Professor at Colorado School of Mines, and Dr. Tadeusz Kulik, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at Warsaw University of Technology.
Over 30 students from ten countries
31 students from ten countries in Europe and North America have registered for RES’s M.Sc. program this year. The students have diverse engineering and earth science background, at either graduate or postgraduate level from renowned technical universities in Europe and the United States. In 2008 RES offers M.Sc. studies in three different concentrations: Geothermal Energy; Fuel Cell Systems & Technologies; and Biofuels & Bioenergy. By 2010 four more concentrations will be added to the program: Hydropower, Energy Systems & Policies, Solar Power, and Wind & Wave Power.
Cooperation with foreign research institutions
RES is closely affiliated with leading universities both in Iceland and throughout the world. An established partnership between RES and distinguished technical universities in both Europe and North America (RESnet) guarantees future research collaboration, faculty and student exchange, as well as cooperation with leading international energy companies.
Among RES’s foreign partner institutes are Warsaw University of Technology, the Technical University of Kosice, the Technical University of Lisbon, Columbia University, Norwegian University of Science & Technology, University of Maine, Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, University of Perugia and Colorado School of Mines. In addition to these RES will work in close cooperation with Icelandic universities, organizations and companies, such as the University of Iceland, University of Akureyri, ENEX, and ISOR - Icelandic GeoSurvey.
RES is owned and operated by Orkuvordur Ltd. The main purpose of Orkuvordur is to provide higher education and transfer of scientific knowledge in the field of renewable energy science and technologies.
