Visa information

Citizens of other countries than EU and EEA

Citizens of countries other than EU and EEA, need a visa before entering Iceland.

Residence permit must be obtained before arriving in Iceland for citizens outside EU and EEA. The residence permit application can be accessed at the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration. Skógarhlíð 6, 105 Reykjavik, tel: +354 510 5400. The residence permit must be obtained before entering Iceland.

If a residence permit is granted, the applicant shall, upon arrival in Iceland, register his domicile with the National Registry(Þjóðaskrá) Borgartún 21a, 150 Reykjavik, tel. +354 528 1000. All citizens should bring a valid passport, which is valid at least three months after the scheduled departure from Iceland.

Some Nationals outside EU and EEA, are exempted from the obligation to carry a visa on arrival in Iceland for a stay of up to three months within the Schengen area. The total stay within the Schengen Area must not exceed three months in any period of six months. (See on webside http://www.utl.is/ which countries.) All citizens who come to Iceland for the purpose of study, need residence permit if staying longer than three months in Iceland.

Citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area

Citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area, who plan to stay longer than three months in Iceland do need a residence permit. The permit may be obtained after arriving in Iceland for most of the EU and EEA countries. The residence permit is applied for at the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration Skógarhlíð 6, 105 Reykjavik, tel. +354 510 5400. EU and EEA citizens do not need special work permit, only residence permit. Bring with you your passport, two photos, your letter of acceptance and your health insurance papers when you apply (E-104). Nordic Citizens

If you plan to stay in Iceland for more than six months you have to bring with you "Internordisk flytteattest" and it is recommended that you have a valid passport. Also you should bring for health insurance, the E-128. Nordic citizens do not need work permit.

The first thing to do is to obtain an Icelandic ID number. Go to the Hagstofa Íslands - Statistics Iceland with your passport, certificate stating that you are going to study at an Icelandic institution and (if you stay longer than six months) an "Internordisk flytteattest". You thereby move your domicile to Iceland, get an Icelandic ID number and enjoy rights under an agreement between the Nordic countries relating to social security, tax affairs etc.

Register at the Registration Office of the university where you plan to study as soon as possible. Bring with you your Icelandic ID number and the letter of acceptance from the university.
