Citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area (list of countries)
Citizens of the EU and the EEA, who plan to stay longer than three months in Iceland, need to register their domicile with the National Registry after they arrive to Iceland. Bring with you your passport, your letter of acceptance from RES, statement of support and your health insurance papers (the E-104 form) when you register.
All citizens should bring a valid passport, which is valid at least three months after the scheduled departure from Iceland.
Citizens from countries outside the European Union and the European Economic Area
A Residence Permit must be obtained before arriving in Iceland for citizens outside EU and EEA. The Residence Permit application and information can be found at the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration http://www.utl.is/. Please note that it can take up to 3 months to get a Residence Permit when all the paperwork has been turned in.
If a Residence Permit is granted, the applicant shall, upon arrival in Iceland, register his domicile at the National Registry.

Nordic Citizens
If you plan to stay in Iceland for more than six months you have to bring with you "Internordisk flytteattest" and it is recommended that you have a valid passport. Also you should bring the E-128 form for health insurance. Nordic citizens do not need work permit.

Apply for an Icelandic ID at the National Registry, bring your passport, certificate stating that you are going to study at an Icelandic institution and (if you stay longer than six months) an "Internordisk flytteattest". You thereby move your domicile to Iceland, get an Icelandic ID number and enjoy rights under an agreement between the Nordic countries relating to social security, tax affairs etc.
